Sunscreen Can Improve Your Results
- Posted on: Jul 15 2018
Many of our patients come in regularly for some of the best treatments available, and we love watching their results give them the glow and confidence they deserve. After all, isn’t confidence why we come in for facials, chemical peels, and other anti-aging treatments?
But did you know that some of our patients aren’t getting the best results they can, by simply not doing one thing every day. UV damage from the sun increases signs of premature aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots (also called hyperpigmentation). It can be pretty amazing to watch what happens when people start using sunscreen on a daily basis, and we bet you can identify people who stayed out of the sun when they were younger, too. Next time you’re out, do a little people watching and see if you can identify who sunbathed in their youth.

Types of Sunscreen
There are two types of sunscreen filters: physical and chemical. Each operates in a different way. Physical filters (Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide) block and bounce UV rays off of your skin. Think of them as a big shiny shield, sending those rays of sun back into outer space. Chemical filters absorb UV rays, keeping them from sinking further into the skin. Think of them as a blanket that gets a little warmer in the sun, but keeps you protected from the burning rays.
Keep in mind that chemical sunscreens might cause reactions in people with sensitive skin. Think about testing products in small batches before buying a big new bottle of something that you’ll just have to throw out. Because chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and undergo a chemical reaction, some ingredients have been known to cause allergic reactions in certain people. Some stores will give you samples, or will even allow you to return a product that doesn’t work for you.
If you’re ready to prolong the effects of your favorite anti-aging treatments, invest in some serious sunscreen. Looking for a chemical peel or facial to kick-start your new skincare regimen? Call us today at (630) 568-3862 to schedule an appointment.
